Kairos serves in 270 prisons around the world. Over 180,000 prisoners have completed Kairos since 1976.
Kairos, from a Greek word meaning "God's Special Time" has a significant impact on many prisoner's lives. Former inmates re-enter society as better spouses, parents and employees. Many become volunteers, start their own ministries, or pastor churches, while others run re-entry programs. Kairos also has a powerful effect upon our volunteers too. Many acknowledge the team training, with its emphasis on introspection, honesty, sharing, and community, strengthens their faith.
Kairos weekends are conducted twice per year. Prior to the four day Kairos weekend, the team meets for 8 evenings with each training session lasting about 2 hours each. The Kairos weekend officially begins on Thursday, ending on Sunday afternoon. Two weeks after the Kairos weekend, we return on Saturday for a 1-day instructional meeting, where we help them form small groups, and get started on their Christian walk.
Each month, we go in for a Saturday morning reunion staying for about 4 hours. it is very important to the "residents" of the prison and serves to provide the continuity of ministry that makes us "the ones who come back."
